Crowd expected at kaumatua's funeral

THURSDAY , 23 FEBRUARY 2006

Several hundred mourners were expected to attend the funeral of respected Ngati Koata kaumatua James Hemi Elkington at Waikawa Marae in Picton today.

The former chairman of the Ngati Koata Trust died at Wairau Hospital on Sunday after a heart attack.

He had suffered from diabetes for a number of years. The 64 year-old stood down from his position as chairman about nine months ago and from his role as Nelson Marlborough regional director for the Ministry of Maori Development two months ago. Minister of Maori Affairs Parekura Horomia attended his tangi yesterday, along with representatives of the Maori Queen and Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman. Mr Elkington's achievements included negotiating customary fisheries regulations and commercial iwi fisheries for the top of the south. He was also involved with South Island customary freshwater regulations. He established the Iwi Safer Community Council for the top of the south and was a chairman of the Runanganui for Te Tau Ihu.

Mr Elkington worked for the Marlborough Harbour Board for 15 years and was also human resources manager for the old Marlborough Area Health Board. He was a trustee of Waikawa Marae. Mr Elkington is survived by three sons and a daughter. (source: The Marlborough Express)
