Roy K Fenton (Tui) - a pen picture

According to Laurie Ward's whakapapa: Tui was born 2 November 1913 and died 29 May 1987. He married Ruby Mitchell, born 8 July 1919. They had several children: Rosalie Tui, Neville Teuraura, Gloria Mae, John David, Brenda Hinewerakape, Vera Maree and Eugene KerryUncle Tui's newspaper death notice said: Regt No. 801926, 2nd Lieutenant, Maori Battalion, WWII, he died at the Barrett Street, Hospital. Service was held at the Owae Marae, Manukorihi, Waitara and interrment at the Waitara Servicemen's Cemetery.
Anecdotes: I enjoyed staying at the home of Uncle Tui and Aunty Ruby when they farmed along side the Oanui Stream adjacent to the Oanui Dairy Factory. They later moved to farm on the Kahui Road, property. He was a Justice of the Peace.
A photo and memorabilia about Maori servicemen of the southern Taranaki area held in the Patea Museum shows a picture of Uncle Tui. He was in the Maori Battalion, his will held by Ivor Prichard, Solicitor of Waitara

On his attestation for service in time of war, he gave the following details: as at 30 January 1940, he was a butcher of Waitara with Aunty Ruby as his next of kin of Waitara. He worked at Thos. Borthwick & Sons having received oneyear of secondary schooling. Also he stated that he was of Oaonui, Opunake, with two children. He served four years in the Territorials. Age 26 when he enlisted his complexion was fair with dark brown eyes and height of 5ft 7ins and had brown eyes. He had served in the 1st Taranaki Regiment for three years, and like his brothers his faith was Church of England.

Gloria and Arthur used to live in St Helens, northern England, and I used to phone her during the 1974/5 period.
Aunty Ruby died in July 2006 and her funeral service was held in New Plymouth. She is buried in the Waitara Cemetery.
